If you have already had a good quality camera that you love, but still lack waterproof feature, you should consider using underwater housing for your camera. Underwater housing is a waterproof camera casing designed for your camera or digital camera to prevent the damage from getting wet.
This is not just an anti-leak casing; but also contains feature to access all the buttons lens mobilization, prevents anti scratching to the lens, and has the ability to stand at some depth. These kinds of housing can be made by the manufacturer itself like Canon, Olympus, and Sony; or separated company like Ikelite, Ewa-Marine, and Fantasea.
Materials used in underwater housing are various, but the most popular are aluminum and polycarbonate. Housings can be made from polycarbonate only, for example Fantasea, Ikelite, and some Sea & Sea; Aluminum only, for example Subal, Nexus, Aquatica, Sea & Sea; or both aluminum and polycarbonate, for example some of the Sea & Sea underwater housings. Aluminum is usually being more durable than polycarbonate, but more expensive.
Underwater housings are made for both compact and digital SLR cameras and made specifically for certain models of cameras. Not every model of digital camera has its underwater housing. Underwater housing for compact waterproof camera is easier to choose rather than DSLR-type camera. When choosing underwater housing for DSLR-type camera, we should consider a few things.
First, it has enough access to all controls for the important buttons. Second, contains the depth rating information to avoid leaking above permitted depth. Third, supports hub for connection with other equipment. Fourth, supports for glass dome ports at different size. Fifth, built in ergonomic access and buoyant.
Some housings have been built in leak alarms if water droplets appear inside the housings. When considering the price, be sure to include the additional cost for other gear.
